Radiologist Career Requirements

Radiologists are among the highest paid health care professionals, and they generally work fairly regular hours. This makes radiology one of the most coveted specialties among doctors. The career requirements for radiologists, then, are understandably very stringent.

In order to become a radiologist, you will need to first obtain a bachelor's degree and then attend a well-respected medical school. After four years of general medical training, you will receive your M.D. and will have to be accepted into a post-graduate radiology training program. These programs are highly competitive, so top-notch achievement in medical school is essential. During the first year of postgraduate work, you pursue an internship at a hospital or other health care facility in which you work various rotations and learn the general responsibilities of radiologists. In the next four years, you work as a resident under close supervision.

The residency guides you through the career requirements for radiologists. This training includes diagnostic work and examinations in the science and technology associated with ultrasounds, CTs, x-rays, nuclear medicine, and MRIs. A residency culminates in your eligibility to take the board examinations given by the American Board of Radiology. If you pass the board exam, you will have met the career requirements for radiologists and will be eligible for a license to begin a practice. Many radiologists go on from their residency to further specialize in specific subfields like neuroradiology and pediatric radiology. These programs typically last one to two years.
