Photography Career Requirements

A picture is worth a thousand words. That's why photographers are in demand in journalism, design, advertising and PR, science and medicine, special events, and fine arts. From weddings to forensic crime scene investigations, photographers are on hand to capture and record important images.

Paving the Road
A photography career starts with a good eye and a high-quality camera. From here, career success is a matter of formal training, practice, and luck. Photography is a highly competitive field, owing to its popularity as an outlet for creative expression as well as a paying career. To distinguish themselves, aspiring photographers build technical expertise and a portfolio of their work.

The technical sophistication of digital and traditional camera equipment makes some sort of formal training a must. Colleges, art institutes, and other training facilities offer photography courses in composition, design, photographic techniques and processes, and equipment.

Associate and bachelor degree programs in Photography provide the most comprehensive foundation for a photography career. A college degree is not a requirement, but a signature asset in a competitive field. Besides learning technical and design skills, graduates build a portfolio under instructor supervision, and make valuable professional contacts. In addition, photographers can lay the foundation for a specialized photography career. Scientific photographers may take medical or scientific courses, commercial photographers may build marketing or advertising skills, and news photographers can take mass communications or media courses.

Practice to Take the Perfect Shot
Aside from completing a professional photography program, photographers learn by practicing their trade. Many photographers begin their careers by interning or apprenticing with an established photographer, assisting in preparatory work, honing technical skills, and developing their portfolio.

Photography is a popular and competitive career. But with such broad demand across media outlets, there is always room for a talented and technically adept photographer to enter the ranks.
