Electrical Engineer Career Requirements

What Skills Should an Electrical Engineer Have?
Electrical engineers work with electrical equipment on all levels: its design, development, testing, and even supervising its manufacturing. You might work on electrical motors, lighting, automobiles, aircraft, radar, or navigation systems. You could also choose to specialize in a specific area, such as power systems engineering or electrical equipment manufacturing.

In addition, you should possess creativity, inquisitiveness, an analytical ability, a detail-oriented nature, and excellent communication skills.

What Education Does an Electrical Engineer Need?
The starting salary for an electrical engineer is among the highest for all college graduates! But to reach that earning potential, you need a bachelor's degree. Continuing education throughout your career can prove useful as well, since it allows you to stay on top of the latest technology.

Electrical engineering courses typically include:
  • Basic science
  • Computers
  • Design courses
  • General engineering
  • Life science
  • Mathematics
  • Physical science
If you don't want a bachelor's degree, then you could start with instruction in engineering technology through either a 2-year or 4-year degree. This prepares you for practical design and production work, and the 4-year program may open up similar job opportunities to a bachelor's degree. But this type of schooling does not enable you to earn a license or register as a professional engineer.

All engineers who offer services directly to the public must have a license. To earn this license, you need a bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited school (the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology), 4 years of work experience, and to pass the State examination.
