Management Career Requirements

You've got to pay the cost to be the boss. But surprisingly enough, management career requirements fit right along with your current educational background and professional experiences. You might find that earning your leadership credentials can be as easy as a few extra semesters of college.

Paving the Road
Many managers never started out with that particular goal in mind. Rather, they achieve that level by excelling at their particular field and then applying that knowledge to the leadership curriculum model. Despite the tendency of employers to hire candidates with a formal degree, a combination of education and experience is still well respected. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that formal education and experience of top executives will vary widely between industries.

Multiple Fields for Multiple Interests
Leadership candidates are needed in virtually every field to help manage human, financial, technological, and natural resources. To that end, management career requirements push candidates to fuse concepts of organization with the specifics of their industry. For example, financial managers must not only be able to direct fiscal direction, they should be capable of managing a team of complex personalities and monitoring business ethics and compliance. The position, and preparation for it, seldom falls neatly into predetermined categories.

Next Generation Management Certifications
The non-profit Association of Professionals in Business Management has announced a couple of dynamic, new credentials for candidates looking to satisfy their management career requirements. This first, the Certified Associate Business Manager, is a bachelor's level professional certification that is based on a pre-MBA curriculum. The program is ideal for those planning to pursue a traditional MBA and culminates in a one-part, four-hour exam. The second, the Certified Business Manager, is a masters-level certification based on an MBA curriculum. It drills business management knowledge, skills, and abilities, culminating in a four-part, 16-hour examination.
