FBI Career Requirements
Career Requirements for Serving in the FBI The FBI is recruiting for Special Agent positions with the agency. Entry requirements for applicants are strict. Minimum requirements include the completion of a four-year undergraduate program, with the agency preferring grads with degrees in law enforcement, computer science, foreign language, or accounting. Law school graduates are also encouraged to apply.
The FBI also favors candidates with educational background or professional experience in criminal psychology, crime scene investigation, surveillance, criminal law, mathematics, forensics, medical specialties, international studies, international finance, computer network security, or physics. Law enforcement grads must have at least two years' on-the-job experience.
FBI Agent candidates must be between the ages of 23 and 37 years to apply and have at least three years of professional work experience in any field before applying. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, or citizens of the Northern Mariana Islands. You must have a current driver's license and be willing to relocate immediately for service in any area under FBI jurisdiction.
Special Skills for Successful FBI Career Applicants The FBI currently is screening applicants who have an educational or experience backgrounds in physical sciences (biology, chemistry, or physics), foreign languages (especially Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Pashtu, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese), engineering, military intelligence, or counter terrorism. All career applicants are required to pass skills exams, entry interviews, physical examinations, a thorough background check, drug test, and a polygraph examination.
Once admitted, FBI agents receive 18 weeks of intensive training at the FBI Academy, located in Quantico, Virginia.
